The Alenda Golf
Club is situated very close to the Sierra de las Aguilas mountains and
the sea, and this location means it has a pleasant climate. It is an
18-hole course, with a gentle, undulating and varied round. It is very
entertaining for players of all levels, and you will really need to use
all of your clubs. It’s quite a quick round, as all of the holes are
linked together and the walks from green to tee are short.
The first nine holes are medium length and favour the accurate player
over the big hitter. The holes are easy to play and the fairways are
very wide, which helps on the tee shots.
The back nine holes require more concentration, because this is the
technical part of the course where
accuracy is
more important than distance. You have to be careful on the 16th and
18th, as these are the two holes which will decide the final result on
your score card.
The greens give a special character to the course because the slopes
allow for a wide variety of flag positions and you will need to
visualise the break very clearly when putting and hit the ball with just
the right amount of “oomph” if you want to hole out in good order.
Alenda
Golf was federated in 1997 and in 1999 it opened an 18-hole, par 72 golf
course, with 6,257 metres of fairways and greens, situated in a hillside
region with views of the sea.
The first 9 holes are
fun and easy, with wide lanes lined with pine, carob and palm trees; in
contrast, the last 9 holes require greater concentration, since this
part of the course technically more demanding, where precision is more
important than distance.
The new clubhouse is
under construction, but now not expected to be finished until June 2006.
Personal view
- An enjoyable course which allows the big hitters to throw the club
around at the ball. You are introduced to the course gradually and it
becomes harder on the back nine. The greens are very fast and well
maintained. A good course for the higher handicapper as there are not
too many difficult holes. I made it round without losing a ball!
Worst hole
- the 14th has a new block of apartments to the right and slopes out of
bounds to the left. Be careful when teeing off as I have seen someone
drive onto an apartment roof. A ball which enters the grounds of an
apartment must not be retrieved.
