APARTMENT
located
700 meters (less than a 10 min. walk) from the blue flag beach of
Playa La Mata Torrevieja, on the Costa Blanca South.
There is a beautiful pool and well looked after gardens with
flower beds. There are prom bars, restaurants and several beach bars
actually on the beach. The holiday apartment is situated at the brow
of a hill, hence the beautiful view of the Med.
No problem to my wife and I (oap,s) but the elderly
and infirm may find it
rather steep. A car is not essential as there are bars,
restaurants, supermarkets and beach all in close proximity.
Within a short walk you will find Indian,
Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and, of
course, English restaurants. There is a supermarket 3/4 minutes away
and several others within a 15 minute walk.
La
Mata is situated on the
N-332 coast road between Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura about 35
minutes drive from Alicante airport
The seaside resort of La Mata is a beautiful and popular destination.
La Mata has some glorious beaches and a good selection of facilities and
still has the feel of an old Spanish town although it has experienced a
lot of development in recent years.
La
Mata, Torrevieja is a typical Spanish village in
the South Costa Blanca,
It is a great place for a holiday
in Spain. The village, not only has some
excellent blue flag, sandy beaches, it
also has an excellent street market every Wednesday morning
where you can buy all your fruit and veg and all the presents to
take back home. La Mata has some brilliant bars, shops and
restaurants.
La Mata centre,
from the apartment,
stroll through the Water Park on your way. A really nice walk. You
will pass the Mississippi bar/restaurant. This restaurant is well
worth an evening visit. A bit more pricey but good value.
Market Day is on Wednesday and this attracts visitors from all
over the surrounding area, La Mata is a fairly small market. For a
bigger version head for Torrevieja on a Friday where there are over
1,200 stalls and thousands of people (but hold onto your handbag, like
at all large markets there are pickpockets about).
La
Mata fiestas - as is the tradition in Spain (any excuse for a holiday!) there are a
number of fiestas and festivals held throughout the year in La Mata, two
of the most important are the Virgen del Rosario (held during October)
and the Virgen del Carmen (held during July), other significant fiestas
are held at Christmas and Easter (Semana Santa).
La Mata has a good selection of shops, bars
and restaurants.
La
Mata - History and Information
- Just north of, and now virtually joined to the bustling Costa Blanca
town of Torrevieja, is the traditional Spanish village of
La Mata. A seaside town with one of the best beaches on the Costa
Blanca, La Mata grew up around the salt industry, and until the
headquarters for the administration of salt was moved to Torrevieja in
1802 it was the most important centre along this part of the coast.
La Mata
historically developed around the salt industry due to the existence of
a huge salt lake to the rear of the town, it became important as far
back as the times of the Romans, and it was the Romans who realised the
importance of salt and found methods for extracting it. The salt
industry in La Mata grew from then onwards and the revenue earned from
salt is said to have paid for the travels of the famous Christopher
Columbus in the 15th and early 16th Centuries. After many years of salt
production in La Mata, the headquarters was moved to nearby Torrevieja
in 1802, increasing Torrevieja's growth and importance.
The salt lake in La Mata is now a significant and protected
Natural Park called the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y
Torrevieja and it contains many species of flora and fauna, and is an
important refuge for various species of birds. Much of the literature
about this park will mention the large number of flamingos to be found
there, however the flamingos disappeared some years ago and have not
returned. To see flamingos you would be better advised to head for Santa
Pola a few miles to the north of La Mata.
